Mark Rylance Biography
Sir David Mark Rylance Waters, professionally known as Mark Rylance, is an English actor, theater director, and playwright. He was the first artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe in London between 1995 and 2005. His film productions include Prospero Books (1991), Angels and Insects (1995), Institute Benzamsta (1996), and Intimacy (2001).
Rylance won the Academy Award and the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Rudolph Abell in Bridge of Spies (2015). Rylance played the title role in Steven Spielberg’s The BFG (2016), a live-action film adaptation of the children’s book by Ronald Dahl, and appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk (2017) based on the British withdrawal in World War II. He appeared as James Holiday in Spielberg’s 2018 film Ready Player One, based on the novel of the same name.
After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, Rylance made his professional debut in 1980 at the Citizen Theater in Glasgow. He appeared in many of Edo’s West End productions in Jerusalem in 1994 and won the Olivier Award. Best Actor for both. He also appeared on Broadway winning three Tony Awards: two for Best Actor in 2008 for Boeing in Boeing and in 2011 for Jerusalem and one for Best Featured Actor for Twelfth Night in 2014.
In 1986, Rylance walked away from the chance to work with Spielberg when he turned down two different roles in the Empire of the Sun (1987). The second offering was for a large part, but with his selection of roles, Rylance was also invited to join the National Theater.
To make the decision, as he later told BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Disc, Rallance used the I Ching (a Chinese system of divination). The answer he received through Divya Dice was “community”, so he opted for the theater’s community rather than filmmaking.
Although Rylance appeared in films during his career and preferred to go to films as a teenager, he stated in 2017, “I was not a good film actor when I was younger. His character was created over several meetings with Mickey Lay, a builder living in a village outside London. (After receiving the honor, Mark went back to the village and gave the award to Le, which he accepted as the inspiration behind his performance.)
