Early Life: McHale was born in Rome, Italy, where his father, Jack McHale, worked as dean of students at the Loyola University Rome Center. His mother Laurie hails from Vancouver, Canada and his father is from Chicago, Illinois. He belongs to Irish and Norwegian descent, and was raised as a Catholic. He grew up in Mercer Island, Washington.
Education: He studied at Mercer Island High School. McHale received a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Washington (1995) and belonged to Theta Chi. He was admitted to the rowing team but later joined the football team. Although most of his teammates received athletic scholarships, McHale was strolling at tight end play for two years. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Professional Actors Training Program at the University of Washington.
Career: After moving to Los Angeles, he started in sketch comedy and worked in a caretaker group before landing TV roles in popular shows such as Will & Grace.
In 2004, he appeared in Spider-Man 2 and began writing and hosting for E! ‘The Soup’, a weekly review of the funniest celebrity and reality TV moments. She earned an Emmy nomination in 2014 for her work.
Joel McHale initially guest-starred in several TV shows such as Bill Nye the Science Guy, The Huntress, Oasis Diagnosis: Murder, and & Will and Grace.
